Peonies and Weddings| February 20, 2017
As a symbol of happiness and prosperity, peonies are the perfect choice of flower for weddings.
With their elegant ruffles and large, full heads, peonies are stunning additions to any bouquet, table decoration, floral crown, or cake.
Peonies come in a wide range of colors from white, to numerous shades of pink, to coral, to burgundy and more. This makes them versatile for many wedding color schemes.
When arranged with roses and/or lilies, peonies make a beautiful display. However, there is no reason why you can’t have a bouquet of exclusively peonies, with no other flowers. Peonies are very versatile. They can be used in more traditional looks with the white and pale pinks or in exotic looks with the corals and burgundies.
Popular with the Hollywood elite, several celebrity couples have used the peony in their wedding arrangements and bouquets. Kym Johnson and Robert Herjavec, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, Lily Allen and Sam Cooper, Drew Barrymore and Will Kopelman, and Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher, to name just a few.
Peonies are so stunning when used as wedding florals that many brides are known to plan their weddings around peony season! Peony season is between late April and August in Alaska. Because of their limited availability and high demand, they are a little more expensive than other flower varieties.
You should not let the extra bit of money deter you from including them in your wedding florals if you really have your heart set on them being included. Remember that peonies have a large head, so not as many are needed to fill a whole bouquet. To reduce costs, use only a few peonies in your bouquet and fill in with other smaller florals. You could go for a more naturalist look by using extra foliage, or go for a minimalist approach and use only one a couple of peonies as your bouquet to save money as well.
Keep in mind that the peony is as scented as it is beautiful, so if you or someone else in your wedding party are prone to allergies or headaches from scented florals, you may want to select a flower with a more delicate scent. Some peonies have a stronger scent than others, with the pale pinks being more fragrant than the maroons and burgundies.
